Old Town Orcutt Farmers Market
September 18, 2024
The Friends of Orcutt Library (FOL) teamed up with the Santa Maria Public Library (SMPL) Bookmobile at the Old Town Orcutt Farmers Market on September 18th to promote a love of reading in our community. The FOL volunteers had a wonderful evening sharing information about the Orcutt Branch Library with those in the community. We sat alongside Jose, Librarian for the SMPL Bookmobile, and his team as they shared the exciting programming coming up at the Main Library with Orcutt residents. SMPL operates the Bookmobile to bring more accessible Library services to neighborhoods across the valley. Residents unable to travel to the Library can instead use the visiting Bookmobile to check out and return books, browse media available in English and Spanish, and even sign up for a library card at the Bookmobile’s many stops.
FOL volunteers met many community members that patronize the Orcutt Branch Library regularly, and others who were unaware that Orcutt has a branch library. We were able to provide information to many parents on upcoming children’s programs and activities, including FOL’s Mouse Tales Storytime which takes place on Tuesday mornings. Several community members signed up and received a library card and others were interested in becoming Friends of Orcutt Library to help fund programs and new library holdings. We hope to see you all again at next year’s farmers market!
FOL Build-a-Buddy Workshop Fundraiser
February 25, 2025
The Friends of Orcutt Library hosted a do-it-yourself teddy bear workshop for our local preschoolers as a fundraiser for the Orcutt Branch Library. The children unleashed their creativity by handcrafting their own furry friend right here at the library. Similar to the concept of Build-a-Bear, each bear was given to the children unstuffed. Children were able to choose between 2 stuffies - a colorful rainbow bear and a cute labradoodle puppy. They were provided a stuffing kit, which included a stuffing packet, a special wish star to insert into the bear, a birth certificate, and a buddy bag.
Twenty-six children and their caretakers participated in the event and the children were encouraged to name their new friends. Some of the names included Lollipop, Bella and Candy Cane. It was so fun to see the children’s thoughtfulness for naming their new friends. Don’t worry if you were unable to participate in February’s workshop, FOL plans to bring this snuggly event back to the library in the future.
